Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A high-ranking representative commented the vandalism rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
