The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a intense contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
