Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
