The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
