RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
